Today we slept in a bit late. After eating our complimentary continental breakfast, we rode the Canadian line to Waterfront and hopped on the seabus to N Vancouver. We then rode the bus up to Grouse Mountain. In the winter this is a skiing area. We still saw several patches of snow even though it is July and 80 degrees. We rode the red gondola up to the ski lodge. We then hiked to the wind solar propellor at the top, and saw a demo and lecture on owls, turkey vultures and bald eagles The birds were beautiful and would fly on command from perch to perch. My favorite was the bald eagle. We observed 2 grizzly bears in their native habitat and heard their keeper tell about their diets etc. Very interesting! Both bears were orphaned and rescued. The next event was a lumberjack competition -tree climbing, ax throw at bulls eye target, log sawing, log rolling on water, and ax chopping a log in half. The gondola up and down provided majestic views of the entire Vancouver area. Also, there were many huge wood carvings ( much larger than life) of explorers, totem poles, birds and wild life-made from giant Sequoia trunks. We enjoyed our exploring for nearly 4 hours on Vancouver's highest peak.
As we rode the bus toward N. Vancouver, we stopped at Capollino suspension bridge. At 40.00 dollars each, we decided to forgo it after all our hiking and nature events on Grouse. We'll save it for the next trip.
After lunch at McDonald's, onward by bus to Stanley Park located west of Waterford terminal. Lion's Gate Bridge connects under here. This is a huge park similar to Central park.
Our third site was Granville Island. This community, on the banks of False Creek river, had a fish market, many restaurants and specialty shops. We got a blueberry gelato at a public market to share.
Onward to VanDusen botanical gardens- 55 beautiful acres of gardens.
Last stop was nearby Queen Elizabeth park-walked to a lookout with a majestic view of the city. This is the highest point in the city and well worth the walk. Once again beautiful gardens!
We are now totally pooped and hungry for a good meal after only our hamburger for lunch. It is 9:00 pm and still a 30 min walk back to hotel by foot to nearest bus stop, plus a 6 block walk to Canada line. We board and get off at Broadway-by Olympic village- in search of a restaurant. Find Cactus club and order tuna and a chicken salad. Did us wonders to rest and eat! Finally back to hotel- the shower and bed were great! Another super day in Vancouver!
It is a clean, diversified, beautiful, friendly city- met Aussies, Californians , an Irish born lady living on a remote Island and many others.
