This morning we boarded the Yukon Whitepass Railroad at Skagway to Fraser. It was built in 1898 to transport gold and minors deep into the Yukon for the gold rush. The train traveled up the mountain on the edge of the mountain. A fascinating trip with beautiful views-scary as you look over deep gorges and cross over the Skagway river and go through 2 tunnels. The engineering was amazing also, considering it was built at the turn of the century. The train use to cross the worlds largest cantilever bridge. The bridge is still standing but the train crosses a new bridge. At Fraser we boarded the motor coach and headed towards Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon territory. The Yukon has the land mass of California and has 35,000 total population with 20,000 in Whitehorse. That should tell you what a remote and wilderness area it is. We stopped at Emerald lake which gleams shades of green like the stone and at Carcross-There are 60 elementary k-8 kids there. Once in high school they must ride the bus to Whitehorse-a 1 1/2 hr. bus drive! This little town was a stopping point for the prospectors heading to Dawson. There was 1 general store located there and it is still the only store in town. Purchased some wonderful homemade blueberry scones there and continued on to Whitehorse and the Westmark hotel. After a brief rest we hiked along the Yukon river. Beautiful wildflowers are in bloom now as it has just warmed up. There is one very similar to a bluebonnet. A favorite is a beautiful purple bloom. It is the state flower-Fireweed. Tonight, we are walking to a Yukon craft event and to the longest fish ladder in the land.
