The cold weather continues to be a shock to the system but managed to find warm leggings and gloves to add to multiple layers of clothing to keep warm today. However, mostly we just tried to stay inside for most of the day where the buildings are centrally heated and warm enough to wander around in just a T shirt.
Stockholm is quite a compact city so we have been able to walk many places, but the public transport system is also very efficient once you work out where you are going. And it is much warmer on the tram than outside in the artic breeze!
Visited the Vasa Museet today with the restored 16th century wooden warship 'Vasa' which sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was raised from the ocean bed in the Stockholm harbour in 1961. The ship is huge with intricate wooden carvings, tall rigging, and twin decks with cannons. The restoration has taken many years and they have even created lifelike replicas from skeletons of some of the people who died on the ship.
Hope you enjoy the photos of Gamla Stan, the Old Stockholm Town, with its narrow cobbled streets, which is where we are staying. And yes, we have now tried a fried herring burger from Nystekt Stromming, a roadside food caravan in Slussen. This is everyday Swedish food, I gather! Lots of fish. The locals also seem to enjoy 'fika' or coffee and cake and talk at regular intervals throughout the working day - I like this idea!
