Apologies for the late email, but we have finally arrived in Jodphur! We left at 10am and arrived at 7:15pm. Just your everyday 9 hour drive!
We had breakfast at the Tree of Life Hotel back in Jaipur. Breakfast was good and was fairly uneventful, except for one little note worth mentioning. Lucy asked if she could have some peanut butter with her Toast. The waiter replied that unfortunately they didn't have peanut butter because it is not currently in season!
Antony hadn't been feeling well yesterday, but slept for about 13 hours and seemed to be better in the morning. However, after about 30 minutes of driving Antony had a bit of a sour look on his face and exclaimed that he needed to use the bathroom... ASAP.
We pulled over almost straight away at what looked to be a toilet. Antony ran out of the Tourist, and almost as quickly came running back in, saying that he just couldn't do it. So we hurried to the next possible stop.
10km later we pulled over at a gas station, and again Antony ran out of the Tourist. I stayed in the Tourist, and was told by the driver that unfortunately this still was not a "Western" Bathroom.
About 15 minutes later Antony came out, and felt compelled to tell everyone exactly what happened.
I'm not going to repeat the exact details, but it involved taking pants off, balancing to ensure to not step off his shoes, using said pants as a scarf and hoping for the best. As he exited he said, "I did specialist maths, physics and chemistry, and that was definitely the most difficult thing I've ever done in my life."
The drive was approximately 330km, but the reason it took so long was because the road became one way each way, and had many parts that were under construction, after the first 100km.
In most places I have been this would just mean that it would be a slow long drive, without much that could be done. Not in India! We must have made over 200 passes over the course of the drive - no exaggeration. And these were not your regular, cautious passes. These were passes where you could clearly see the trucks and cars bearing down on you while you made the move. We passed on roundabouts, speed bumps, construction zones, turns, hills and gravel... And this wasn't just us... It was everyone! Mayhem wouldn't do it justice. Our driver deserves a medal for getting us here without incident.
My "favourite" pass of the day was when we overtook a gravel truck on our left, while a car coming the other way was also overtaking a truck to its left. Therefore there were simultaneous passes going on - 4 cars going directly at each other! I thought that was the end of us.
There weren't as many animals on the road today - the main problem was slow tractors and motorbikes. The amazing thing though was that cars and trucks seem to completely ignore the motorbikes when passing. If there is one coming the other way - its like its assumed they will get the heck out of the way while we go straight at them.
We are all exhausted and heading to bed. Less driving tomorrow. Definitely won't forget today's drive!
