Ryan and I have definitely been spoiled when it comes to food in Germany....especially here in Grotzingen. Phyllis and Gerhard and both FANTASTIC cooks; they have treated the entire family to several traditional German meals.
The day after the wedding instead of simply relaxing, Phyllis came home and put together a spread of spätzle, sauerkraut, pork, meatloaf, and sausage (she even made meat free sauerkraut for me J) Leftover wedding cake capped off the meal followed by fantastical tea and coffee.
Two nights later was the sausage fest. It began with an aperitif at Sara & Alex's apartment. Sara made these cheese & sausage pastry things which according to Ryan, I MUST get the recipe for. When then all head back to the Christ residence where Gerhard grilled up 5 different kinds of wurst (sausages) which were accompanied by a green salad, potato salad, and käsespätzle (cheese spaetzle). We all dined in the garage and had yet more wedding cake. Crystal and Andy (whom Ryan and I are staying with) also attended this meal. It was nice dinning with them because they have been great at trying to teach Ryan and I the German language.
Last night we moved indoors where the 15 of us enjoyed a sit down dinner of schnitzel, more sausage, and leberkäse which is like a meatloaf. Dessert consisted of three different kinds of traditional German caked...plum, rhubarb, and a jelly/fruit angel cake thing. There was also cinnamon ice cream, frozen truffles, and finally dark chocolate sticks.
Tonight is Sara's birthday and Doreen and Jim's last night before flying home to Sarnia. We are all planning on going to the Adler again only this time, Ryan and I are in charge of dessert. I am thinking Rice Krispies but we will see J
