October 1
We decided to move out of Cheri and Danny’s home to give them a break from houseguests. We checked into a Hampton Inn and just spent a quiet day watching UM football on TV.
In the evening, we met the Krauses and had a nice dinner at a Greek restaurant after which we stopped for a Dairy Queen.

I was assigned the task of going to a bakery and picking up the bread known as Cholla (?sp) which is an important part of the observation of the Jewish New Year known as Rosh Hashonah. I walked there, about a half mile, and found an incredible line of people waiting for the same thing. I had a plan to meet my old practice partner, Leon Hochman, for breakfast at 9:00 at the Stage Deli which happens to be right next door to the bakery. I knew I’d never make it with a line that long, so I called Rita who came up and took my place in line.
So then I walked next door and met Leon. As we enjoyed our bagels and lox, we relived many of our shared memories. We had known one another since the 4th grade, then went through med school, internship, and residency together. Finally, we, along with Richard Goldfine, set up a 3 person OBGYN practice in the Detroit area. I practiced with them for 5 years until electing to move to San Diego in 1979. Leon is still practicing, including deliveries ,and has no thoughts of retiring.
Finally, we went out to Cheri’s and spent the day with them and lots of family members in celebrating the New Year. Here enjoying the company of Rita’s grandnephew and grandniece Jared and Jordyn Kaplan.

With the adventure winding down, we spent the morning in Detroit, first visiting the Shinola Store. Once known only for shoe polish, it now features extremely upscale wristwatches and bicycles.
This put us in the vicinity of the Wayne State University campus, our alma mater. We took a quick look into the watering hole we used to frequent, still called The Traffic Jam and still featuring a urinal filled with flowers on its outer facade. Also nearby was the more than 100 year old student union building appropriately known as “Old Main”.
Next we drove down to the Detroit River and walked over to the Renaissance Center where the GM headquarters is located.
We were starting to get hungry, so walked over to one of Detroit’s iconic restaurants, The London Chop House, and ate a delicious lunch.
Had dinner with family, then headed to the hotel for our final night of this voyage.
