Up early to cram in a final morning in Melbourne. We took the tram to the Immigration Museum or as it would be better described we like Brits and at a push other English speaking white Europeans and the numerous ways we tried to keep everyone else out or suppressed particularly if you are Chinese. Then off to the airport where there is significant building work going on. Our carrier was using a portacabin as a terminal. It was snug with people all over the floor but they were still charging £2.50 for a bounty bar. We brought our own supplies.
David's been organising the transfers to and from the airports. We had drivers meet us at the gate, taxis, and in St Kilda a shuttle bus. This time however transfers were expensive in chauffeur driven cars as were taxis, tripadvisor advised against the shuttle buses. The only option was a train, which the airport authority charged an extra 12.90$ each on top of the fare to use the station. David was not going to pay that; 26$ saving is worth the 20 min walk. So off we went past the buses and taxis across the car parks and derelict building sites to find the pavement which lead us to Mascot station where we caught the train into town at a considerable saving costing only 3.80$ each.
Train to Central took about 10mins and after another 20min walk we were at our hotel in the rather smart area of Darling Harbour.
After checking in we headed off to the backpackers area and Chinatown for dinner and a few large pitchers of beer. Ah back to the lovely (and modestly priced) Asian food.
