We took the local bus up to Chiang Khong which would be are place to stop for a day until we could cross the border to Laos! The local bus was very breezy and interesting to see the way the rain had affected other areas of Thailand other than Chiang Rai. Which of the rain had flooded paddyfields and fields, many houses outside of Chiang Rai were on stilts good thing to really as the water was very high.
Chiang Khong is small to say the least, we stayed in a guest house which was lovely over looking the Mekong, and on the otherside was Laos. The couple that ran the guest house were very helpful and through them we were arranging our journey from Chiang Khong to Huay Xuai.
The morning of crossing the border was very wet indeed, we drove to the border cross in the back of a pickup truck with no shetter from the rain and by the time we got there we were wet through. We got stamped out of Thailand and then after a short boat trip we were stamped and visaed into Laos. We were meant to be getting the slow boat to Luang Prabang but after being wet and doubting how long it would take us we paid an extra 4 pounds each and got a night bus which started at 5pm and finished at 7am in Luang Prabang.
