We have been in the crazy busy Bangkok for a couple of days now! Enjoying slowly learning how to get around in this traffic heavy city. We landed at around 2pm in Bangkok so as we headed to our hotel we had enough time to settle in our hotel room which was rather nice for 13pound a night!
After our first night in Bangkok we decided to set out visiting some of the sights ... first stop was MBK mall ... 7 floors of shopping, mostly full of fake designer handbags, watches and phones! They even had stalls that were selling the new iphone 4g in white not even out anywhere in the world and mini iphones although the stall owners were trying to convince you they were really!
Our next stop was the Khoan San Road, the travellers heaven fulled with street stalls selling food, typical travellers gear and gifts. We got to Khoan San Road via bus, as we have decined the Tuk Tuk drivers with their "bargin prices" and selling you "finest" silk. As we moved through the streets of Bangkok on the bus, you see colour everywhere, make it pure easy to capture the beautiful shots of the city (they will be uploaded later). We met a friend of ours Laura Tacey who has been living in Bangkok teaching english for a few months, she took us to the nicest and cheapest Khoan San dining. It was lovely to catch up with her, and her all about her time living in Bangkok so far.
The following day we set our sights on seeing the Grand Palace, however by the time we turned up it was closed for a few hours. After being bothered by a few Tuk Tuk drivers offering to take us to yet more sights for cheap as chips as well as taking us to "real" watch shops, we managed to stubble across the boat trips. The first place was selling them for 10 pounds an hour per person, but we thought we could maybe get it cheaper. So the second place we went to was a lot more, but we managed to get it down to 10 pound an hour per person to get the long boat all to ourselves (VIP we are haha) and the boat left right away! They long boat trip was great fun, although we were slightly worried how dry we would end up staying with sharp turns round the canals and waves from the other boats!? We saw the sights from the waters edge like the Big Budha, and the Royal Boat, as well as the floating food market. We got to the fish farm were for a couple of pence we got some bread and fed it to the fish ... they were mental jumping out the water to get the bread on top and over each other (photos and video to follow). As we smoothly glided through the canals we saw some small crocs and a basking lizard to slowly make it back to dry land. One of the best spent hours of our time so far.
After our exciting boat trip we made our way to the Grand Palace! From the outside it looks impressive and even more amazing from the inside! David had to get some fun trousers to cover his legs, however I bought along a long sleeved shirt in my bag, so I escaped having to borrow any clothing to make sure you were suitably dressed! As we walked round the Palace and the Temples they were so detailed and beautiful, the detail that went into the building was just devine! They were so brightly coloured and gold being the first choice of colour. They had guards in uniform, not a straight faced as the London Beefeaters, much smiler and friendly!
After making our way back to the hotel, we decided to make our way to lumphini night market, we got the MRT there which is the underground! Very fast and efficent and easy to use unlike the buses! We made our way round the market filled with more "finest" silk and gifts and "real" designer goods and watches! But there was some lovely fairy lights and goods there, usual shoes and beautiful clothes. We had some street stall food for tea ... yummy!
