So we have had a great time in Panama, the apartment complex has been a real bonus.
Today however we decided to do 2 oceans in a day, in the moring we caught the Panama Canal railway from the Pacific coast, to the Colon on the Atlantic side.
The trip was brilliant, there is a glass carriage where you can look out at the Canal, the rainforest/jungle and different set of locks which we passed.
This was definately the highlight of the day - the only problem was that it ends in Colon and doesn't return until the afternoon!
Colon is actually refered to in the Lonely Planet as a dangerous slum - and honestly it is regarded as the most dangerous city in all of central America! So we didn't want to stay there... luckily we got a lift to Portobello - an old Spanish town, where they worship a Black Christ, have 2 forts and a lot of history. Francis Drake and Captain Morgan are part of this pirate history. We also got to see the old US canal zone and bases, in which they used to own prior to 2000 where they handed it over to Panama.
Anyhow we had a spent the rest of the day exploring the old town and then visited the Caribbean ocean for a swim at one of the local beaches. Beautiful! The train ride back was also great, with the mist and fog setting in, and the huge tankers on teh canal finishing up on the locks
So we said our goodbyes to Ange and Drew, but will see them again in Australia in december. so it was goodbye to Cebtral America and hello USA for 6 days...
We are very excited about being able to flush toilet paper down the toilet, drink tap water and not wear mosquito spray everyday. Woohoo
