So we left Roatan behind while crying lots of tears! some because we loved the place so much and some due to the fact it was a 2 day trip to Granada, Nicaragua. And believe us this was a hell of a trip! We skipped the ferry from hell and flew to the mainland, then caught a 10 hour coach ride to a place called Comayagua and honestly we got to see nothing of it as it was 10pm by the time we got in. A 5am start and a chicken bus ride into the capital of Hondurus (nicknamed Kabul by one of our group) followed another 3 hours to the border, then 3 hours to Granada.
The only positive thing about this trip was the scenery, it changed from very flat and green to huge mountains and cloud covered peaks. Its gorgeous scenery.
Luckily Granada is fantastic. Another quaint colonial town, with paved streets and street performers. Its very safe and has lots of little shops and restaurants, we ate a local speciality which was in essence 2 Pork Scratchings over cabbage and potato/plantain (not the best local meal we have tried!). Our hostel seemed nice until we found that we weren't the only ones sleeping in our bed! Yes we had HUGE bedbug investation and had to be moved. Don't worry we have completely checked our bags and cloths and luckily are clean! Although Dave registered around 15 bites taht came up in mini blisters :-(. So we will inform everyone of that on Trip advisor shortly.
The town itself is great, very open to tourists and friendly. We visited a castle, that was used in the civil war as a prison - it was sort of creepy especially in the lower levels, where there were torture chanbers, bats, scorpians and spiders. We also got to the summit of an active volcano, which was super cool (well not literally!). You could see the crater, steam arising, old lava flow and even hear explosions from within the crater - HIGHLIGHT! We also visited an old Volcanos crater that was now a huge lake, a local pottery and Megan got to see the sunset and monkeys over lake Nicuragua.
Its a beautiful country so far and we both can't wait to head to Ometepe Island.
