Ia Orana all you lovely people.
So we have finally made it we are in paradise, unlike Tahiti, Huahine has perfect beaches and gorgeous reefs of turquoise green colour. The island itself is one of French Polynesia's lesser tourist islands, so we had booked a robinson cruiso type accomodation - 2 huts a bathroom and us, in the middle of a lagoon on the island. Actually we were on a Motu - which is a small island that is part of Huahine but completely seperated by water.
Our hosts were called Walter and Kim and they are a French English couple who have rented the island on a 10 year contract from the government - what a cool story. They live there with their young daughter, Daisy (very cute!). The island is a full of palm trees and surrounded by white sandy beaches. One on the lagoon side was calm and Megan found her pasttime feedeing the very friendly fish everyday in the crystal clear waters. We later found out they were called Mullet fish... the otherside was a full reef, but with a stronger current - ideal for snorkelling - and is also home to a friendly bunch of clown fish (nemos). The island is completely idillic, no resorts or light polution so when night arrived the stars were outstanding, we also got to see sunrise from the sea and some gorgeous sunsets.
This part of our trip was chilling, cooking fresh Mahi Mahi, amoung a whole host of other fresh fish on a coconut fire. Drinking and eating fresh coconut every day and generally snorkelling, swiiming, reading in our hammocks and going to bed at around 8pm... Yes Tidey was very happy with that one... esp one day when she didn't get up until 10... thats over 12 hours sleep! Shocking.
We also had the use of free kayaks - something Megan will never forget and went on an island tour to see a pearl farm, the reef, feed sharks, have a picnic on a private Motu (with raw swordfish salad as food, and watch rays). That was a pretty cool day... Dave went diving but was not too happy when they went very deep and saw nothing of much significance - plus the current under the water verged on dangerous! Anyhow hopefully a few in Bora Bora our next destination will cheer him up.
All in all this island was fantstaic - a realdesert island experience.
