David and Julie Browning's Travels
Day 2 of our run home, and first stop is a small coastal town in North
Yorkshire, Whitby. According to Wikipedia,
Whitby is the home of the finest fish & chips in the UK (in fact
Rick Stein has nominated The Magpie Cafe as the best in Britain).
The drive down from Edinburgh to Whitby is picturesque - rolling hills
covered with a light blanket of snow, green valleys dotted with herds of
sheep. The scenery becomes more coastal as we near Whitby itself, and
we're soon navigating our way thru the town down to the port area, which
is the town center.
Unfortunately the Magpie Cafe is closed for renovations, but there is a veritable plethora of fish shops in the area to choose from. The claim to be the best for fish and chips
is well founded. The fish we had was quite simply the best we've had both here and back home.
Being fed, its time to head off for our 2nd stop of the day, Scarborough.
