Dangerous Dave's Daring Deeds
Hello from the sunny shores of Vietnam, onto which I stepped again, having spent today on a dive boat. Or rather, under a dive boat, since I was, as you might assume, diving. Yep, back in the water for Dave and his badly equalized ears, to take part in a Dive into Earth today...or something with a similar name - a programme to clean up the ocean bed and raise awareness about littering and its detrimental effects - an awareness that really does need elevating out here - Ever since leaving Singapore, I've been struck by the locals absolute disregard for caring for nature blahdeblahdeblah, and couldn't believe how good, in comparison, we are in England/Europe. And I managed to find a couple of beer cans, a whole load of fishing rope, and 2 cigarette packets that earned me the prize for the most cigarette packets. Go Dave.
Back to Saigon though. I didn't die, as you may have gathered, so you can all breathe again. Thank you for your concern. The War Remnants museum was a pretty harrowing experience, as you'd expect, but well set out on the whole. The worst part was probably the pickled, mutated foetuses that were on display, to show the terrible effects of Agent Orange, used by the Americans during the Vietnam war (or American War as it's called here). The Cu Chi tunnels, which I visited the next day, were again a history lesson of the moving kind, and I was, again, not too impressed to see a shooting range featuring as an attraction for the tourists who had just walked through the forest 'museum'. But hey, each to their own.
The highlight of Saigon was meeting up with Martyn and Sally, into whom I bumped at the WR museum - the next two nights were a little blurry, but I found my specs and then the drink swam into focus. And out again. Awesome times were had, and it was brilliant to see them again, having last seen them at Rio's 'Carnaval'!
The next few days are going to be taken with tonight's beach party (for which I am on the guestlist, oh yes), tomorrow's recovery position lying in my $5 a night (Vietnam's VERY expensive on the accommodation front) hotel room, watching cable tv and dipping in and out of the minibar. Did I mention $5/night? The days after that will include a couple more dives, a boat trip among the islands, and a journey to Hoi An where I believe tailoring has reached an all time new low price. Rock on the 'pimping suit'. Cadbury purple? (Thanks Ele).
Lots of love to all of you, hope to hear from ye soon, xxx
