Our current location is the beautiful Island of FLores, in the northern region of Guatemala.
This is a tiny island within a river system, a small access bridge is all that connects it to the mainland. Lots of nice buildings and loads of riverside bars and resturants, and of course lots of amazing sunsets!
We are staying in a place called Los Amigos Hostel which is excellent (still staying in our little tree house!) it is a very lively place with its own restuarant with bar (with happy hours of course) and live music each night.
On Thursday we decided to take a small taxi boat across the river to a peninsular and hike up to a viewing platform and then a beach. We thought it would be nice and easy however it proved to be rather challenging having to trek through hidden forest tracks and getting lost many times, asking for lots of directions and having to walk very carefully past a massive swarm of hornets
Eventually we found the beach, which was almost empty apart from ´the guardian of the beach´ who was an old man who I suppose just guards the place (not sure from what) after paying him 5 Quetzels, we jumped in the warm water for a relaxing swim.
Last night (shortly after the photo was taken of a local street parade) the heavens opened up and unleashed a torrent of rain, proper tropical storm. The power went out twice and there was a flash of lightning covering the entire sky every 2 to 3 seconds all night (no kidding, it is really that often) Lightnining storms back in England will seem a rather relaxed event after what happens here most nights!
It had cooled off a little at the end of last week (into high 20´s rather and 30´s) but that has come back with a vengence now, and it is very hot again, both day and night.
Heading south after this where the terrain becomes more mountainous so we are hoping the temperature will be a bit cooler!
