So we left our nice mountain top home of Lanquin and jumped in a bus to commence yet another 9 hour bus journey, heading further south to the small town of Antigua.
Antigua consists of about 50,000 people and 3 volcanos. Namely Volcan Agua (water) Volcan Fuego (Fire) and Volcan Acatenango (?) which surround the town and have caused it many troubles in the past.
Volcan Fuego last let rip in 2010 and is considered a constantly erupting volcano, all be it at a small scale - of course every now and then it likes to remind the residents that it is there.
Considering this town has been hit numerous time with lava, and also earthquakes (it is on the Pacific Ring of Fire) it is rather beautiful, even the ruined churches are stunning.
Guatemala City is the current capital of this land as a result of having to move from this location (hence being called Antigua) all the residents were ordered to leave but some stayed, and we think that was a wise move as its such a pleasant place to visit.
The photo is from Cerro de la Cruz, a vantage point up the northern hills, you can see the town below and Volcan Agua looming in the background. As always seems to happen, while Dave was taking this photo a local policeman came over for a chat (why do they always come and talk to Dave? Do Banbury police share their records with Mexico and Guatemala?)
After some broken Spanish we established that Emily is Dave's girlfriend, that we have no kids and that we like the view....
Emily intentionally did not come to Dave's aid as she thought it was good for him to struggle through and improve his Spanish. Next week we will be commencing Spanish lessons so we shall see if it improves!
