Day 46 - We were awake at 2.30am for a 3.30am taxi ride to Rome airport for the flight to Mykonos. The 2 hour 30 minute flight was smooth (most of the passengers were younger headin to Mykonos to party, thankfully they slept and it so the flight was quite) a change to have much cooler weather compared to Rome. The resort vehicle met us for a 15 minute trip to Petinos Beach and as we were too early to check in we caught a local bus into the capital Fabrika for a bit of sightseeing. The city streets were at times very narrow but that did not stop small cars and scooters trying to share the streets with the walkers. The harbour at the end of town (called the Old Port) was home to many interisland tourist ferries as well as some very large and impressive private motor yachts. Further around the island is the New Port where larger cargo ships and smaller cruise liners can tie up. The larger cruise ships had to anchor just off shore and ferry passengers into the Old Port. The Old Port area as well as the town contained your typical tourist shops. As this is peak season, everywhere on the island was busy, and most stay open until the early hours of the morning. Many restaurants are full still at 11pm. In the off season, many just close up. Mykonos swells from a few thousand to over 30,000 in peak periods. Our accommodation was upgraded to a 5 star resort right on the beach due to a documentary crew from the UK taking over our original booking. Our balcony views over Petinos were great. It was 50 metres walk between the resort room to the resort pool and to the beach and a great selection of good cheap restaurants spread along the foreshore. It looked as if this was going to be a tough 4 days.
