My Trip
Carrying on from my branching out and visiting new places I woke up with all the joys of Summer and was there lying beside me in my top bunk bed was none other than Keira Knightly... what a night! She woke up, looked longingly into my eyes and said Dave take me to Bondi! Then I woke up... God Damn it!
Chance would have it that Dan the guy sleeping in the bottom Bunk and Henry a Danish barmaid (yes just picture it), were headed to Bondi Beach...surreal!
Arhhhh the legend that is Bondi Beach! I must snap out of my dream and go see it for myself. So we got breakfast and caught the Train to the Beach. It wasn't the warmest of days but still, Bondi is renowned for being one of the nicest beaches in Sydney, along with Manly and Palm Beach (Summer Bay).
It's a 15-minute train ride; followed by a 10 minute bus ride to get to the Beach itself, but it didn't disappoint. Golden Sand, in a crescent shape was the first thing that I saw turning the corning into the main road adjacent to the sea.
A paradise for surfers and all kind of extreme sports, such as skateboarding, roller-blading and BMX's. It was a weekday so luckily not too busy, so we walked the beach from point to point, taking my shoes off to feel the water beneath my feet.
Henry is a cool, but slightly mad girl with a huge smile when she wants too, but could become quite moody too. Reminds me of somebody back home! No comment.
From the Beach you can see why Bondi is so Trendy, its seafront is littered with little cafes, bars and expensive shops. And obviously the skate parks, which I watched for a while, are very much a part of its culture. These kids, who must be 9-12 years old were skating and jumping like crazy, twisting their bodies' 180 degrees upside down! Amazing. Anyhow back to the Beach, the waves were ever present, crashing down throughout the whole beach. This meant that the Surfers were everywhere too. It made for some good photos! I will surf sometime soon - probably when I head up the East Coast and West with Eoin and Julian. For now I'll just enjoy the feeling of fine golden sand underneath my feet, and leave the shark infested waters to the Pro's.
We walked the length of the beach up-to the rocks on the far side. Which we decided to climb and head further out towards the ocean. There's where I got the money shot - a wave breaking on the Cliff, hitting it with such force the spray of water must have reached 15ft into the air. Sitting here, it was amazing to see how small we really are.
I could have sat and watched the waves for hours! A great place to think, or even just chill out. We decided to move back when Dan saw a guy getting hit by a wave, and only just escaping - the tide was coming in!
Luckily we made it no problems and headed back for a drink at the waterfront.
I will visit Bondi Beach again. I promise you that much, but due prior commitments I had to disappear early. I think a night out and a visit when its warmer will definitely be in order, plus there is a really good walk from Bondi to "Coogee" (unsure of spelling) Beach along the cliff tops I will do also.
There is so much to do in Sydney and I plan on doing it all.
