We had heard good things about Slovenia, namely the capital Ljubljana and the beautiful Lake Bled nearby so wanted to go and explore. We arrived in Ljubljana in the afternoon rather exhausted and smelly due to taking a couple of trains from Krakow so we showered and visited the 'sky scraper' - all the way to the 12th floor for a drink on the roof with great views all around. The next day we explored a bit more by walking around the castle grounds before taking a walking tour where we saw the markets, numerous bridges (including the three bridges and the dragon bridge), the beautiful university buildings and basically everything that their main architect Plecnik had created. We also visited the Metelkovo Mesto - old army barracks that some squatters in the 1990s turned into a mini Christiania (in Copenhagen). We finished off our time in Ljubliana with a local delicacy - horse burger (seeing as we didn't shop at Tesco's in London and had missed out on it earlier)!
Having seeing most of the sights in Ljubljana we set off for Lake Bled and our amazing glamping hut complete with wood fired hot tub. We had a cute little wooden A frame building with a bed and some shelves and a nice big window looking out the back to the hot tub that we used every evening. Bled was lovely and we enjoyed it all, going for hikes to Vintgar Gorge, up the nearby hills for amazing views over the small lake and we even managed to go for a run around the lake (a 6km loop) and Darin got in for a very refreshing swim (Ellen stuck to the hot tub). Because of the high hills around the campsite we lost the sun quite early meaning the evenings were quite cool. It was therefore time to continue heading south towards Italy. Leaving Bled by train we got to see even more of the beautiful countryside and admire the blue water in the rivers.
