As there was one final bank holiday weekend before we finished work and started 'the travels' we decided to visit Portugal again. We had an early flight out of Gatwick (5:30am) which meant we arrived into Porto nice and early at 8am so lots of time to visit. We started the trip with a private tour of Douro Valley (thanks to Sally & Whit). We set off with our guide Pedro with a lovely drive through the valley and arrived at Sandeman vineyard late morning for a tour then some port tasting with gorgeous views over the Douro River. We had lunch then visited another vineyard for some wine this time. Then it was time for the drive back to Porto. Pedro gave us a driving tour around Porto so we could get our bearing for our sight seeing the next day. We checked in to our air b&b apartment with a lovely sun filled terrace and decided that we were too tired to go out for dinner so cooked dinner in the apartment and had an early night. On Sunday we set off to explore the city, most of this was looking at gorgeous buildings, admiring the views from the many vantage points and visiting churches. The Santa Clara church was beautiful inside and not as popular as the main cathedral so nice and quiet. The tiled artwork in the main train station was amazing showing the stories of the area. In the afternoon we turned to the other main sight which was port caves in the Gaia side of the Douro River. We visited Taylor's where we got a tour of the caves where the port is aged then got to try a few different ports. We also got some free tastings at a a couple of cellars so had a great afternoon of drinking! The final stop in Gaia was to do a river cruise going up and down the Douro. After a busy day walking around we went back to the apartment for a bit of a rest and went out for dinner near the apartment. This was quite off the tourist track so there wasn't a lot open but we found a quirky restaurant with a pianist, very cheap wine and nice fish dishes. There were a few places closed on Sunday so we fortunately had Monday morning to visit the markets (not that impressive), the Majestic Cafe which is a lovely Viennese style cafe and the famous bookshop where some of Harry Potter was filmed. It was the time for some final relaxing on the balcony at the apartment before heading back to London for 4 days of work!
