Day 26-31 in the world of Sam and Dani: Arrived in Phuket and headed to Phuket Town to our first hostel. Now, we are gradually learning that we need to research where we stay rather than pick somewhere random. Phuket Town was not the ideal place for us, busy in the day but quiet at night... and there was no beach! People in our hostel were quite boring too, choosing to watch dvd after dvd rather than go out or even talk! First night we went to a bar with two of the only people that wanted to do something, this is where we discovered that Phuket Town has no nightlife. We went to the Timber Hut which according to the girls lonely planet book gets so busy that by 10pm there is only standing room left, so we went and at 10pm.. nothing happened! We decided to go find somewhere else and bumped into some Kiwi lads who joined our search. After having a look around the two people from our hostel went back and we went back to the Timber Hut with the lads for 'A' drink.. obviously this didnt happen! The bar was alot busier with a live band on so we stayed there
We stayed in Phuket Town for 3 nights (only because we had already booked and paid), getting the bus to Patong in the daytime so we could get to the beach. After the 3 nights we moved over to Patong with two lads from the hostel who also wanted something more lively. We stayed in a cheap hostel called Coast Star Mansion which is a street from the beach. If you go to Patong stay there just because the very camp thai man who works there is hilarious. Sam's name in thai means 3 so he renamed us 1, 2, 3 - neuong, song, sam.
We spent 3 days in Patong and had a really good time mooching round etc. We hired scooters on one of the days to explore the island and is a must for anyone going, they were soooo much fun! Went to lots of beaches (see pics) and its just a better way than the bus to see the island. At night we went out in the town going to different clubs and bars and seeing lots of ladyboys! We seen loads- some were really good and had us guessing whether they were ladyboys or women just thrown in to confuse people, but some were awful and looked like drag queens, so funny tho! The clubs were really good, although it was horrible to see so many western men (old, ugly, fat) with really young thai girls (mainly hookers). We also met a really nice group of lads from France and went out with them a few nights, getting some tips about Kho Phi Phi and the Full Moon.
The difference between Bangkok and Phuket was so big. If you told the people trying to sell you things that you werent interested they actually listened, so although you still got pestered it was nice to have abit of piece. Looking forward to Koh Phi Phi now cos the pictures we seen from the French lads looked amazing =)
