Dan and Lu's Travels
Our last day in Texas and it was pouring with rain this morning. Darrell was working but the rest of us went to the Johnson Space Centre, just south of Houston.
Olivia and Rachel took us both on their respective teams for their ongoing game of spot the beetlebug (new shape Beetle) Rachel and I got quite competitive and many new rules were invented....
The space station was really fun. There are a lot of children orientated things but we also watched some really cool films about the history of space travel. There was a tram tour that took us (in the rain) to the mission control building, which houses the current one and 'historic mission control' - which is where we were taken. We sat in the viewing part which is like cinema seats sloping down towards a glass screen through which you can see banks of very old-skool monitors. Apparantly ALL the computers in this room had less power than a standard laptop today!
Every President of the United States since (not including) JFK up to the late '70s have sat here and watche dvarious missions. This control room is where they spoke to Neil Armstrong in July '69 on the moon and where the famous "Houston, we have a problem" came through from Apollo 13. It was all quite exciting really!
Later we met Darrell and went to a local Mexican restaurant, which was delicious. Back at the hosue Olivia entertained us with her Texan thing - hitches up her jeans and putrs her thumbs firmly in the belt loops and strides towards you saying "hiiiiiii, aaiiiim Oliviaaa, and aaiiiim from Tiiiieeeexas" !!!
