Dan and Lu's Travels
After packing a 101 things into the van we set off to Galveston to camp on the beach. Galveston is a peninsular island south west of Houston. The roads were pretty busy and when we got there to meet Serena and Darrell's friends, Colin and Fiona and their son Angus, we weren't camping on the beach but near the bay.
So we threw a few things onto the campsite and headed for the beach. The beach itself was nothing to write home about, as everyone warned us, but it was nice to be beside the seaside again. Because the sea is the Gulf of Mexico its very warm, like being in a bath!
We brought chairs down to the water's edge and sat in the late afternoon sun.
Dan has been wanting to go fishing for months and for some reason never has. Darrell loves fishing so they hooked up some bait and went into the sea; he'd been talking about fisherman type things, techniques and bait etc, in the car and spoke quite knowledgeably. Once they were up to their waists and Darrell was showing Dan how to cast the line Serena giggled, she said that he never catches anything, he looks and talks the parts and is determined but to no avail!!
Serena, Fiona and I were talking a while later when Serena glanced over at Dan and said " Dan's caught something!" and then "wow, it looks big" and then Fiona shouted "it looks like a shark!"
Suddenly everyone around us and in the sea was enacting the opening scene from Jaws, kids running out of the water, everyone on their feet shouting "shark!" and looking at each other, shocked.
Poor Dan was stood waist deep in the Gulf of Mexico, resting the rod on his stomach and looking like he was going to lose the fight with the shark on the end of the line. he brought it out and Darrell ran out after him to take the hook out of its mouth. It was pretty big and very shark like (obviously... but it was scary!) - but it was still a baby. Darrell put it back in the sea and everyone began to disperse, while Fiona fretted about where the mother was and Dan just looked strange. He sat for the next hour with a slightly baffled looking smile on his face....
So, afetr that drama we all went back to camp and then to a seafood restaurant where the shark story was discussed at length! I've got a feeling we're all going to hear this story for a long time to come!!!
