Hellooooo Mexico!
The day I left started as all my days of travel do... uploading a Facebook status (always guaranteed a few likes).
So after a long journey including drinking too much prosecco and crying at the Notebook whilst sat alone in the flight and taking 3 hours to get through American immigration only to be in their country for 5 hours and check straight back in again (bloody Americans) I finally made it to Mexico.
I was slightly anxious about getting a taxi alone in the middle of the night in Mexico City due to all the bad press and due to a horrible taxi man Izzy and I experienced in the Philippines. However I got in the taxi, he cranked up Mexican beats and I soon felt like I was born to be a sassy, salsa dancing Mexican goddess.
The Kiwi gals weren't meeting me until the next day so I spent the day alone exploring the streets. I thought there would be many tourists around but as soon as I stepped out of the hostel with shorts on and blonde hair swinging I soon realised there really aren't many tourists and as usual in these countries I was about a foot taller than everyone, the only blonde person and to make it worse my long white lanky legs were definitely an attention grabber. Thank goodness I knew the crucial Spanish phrase of "no gracias" to get through the day.
As I glided though the markets trying to channel my inner Mexican I was bombarded with tasters of delicious foods, spices and liquors. Heaven! Until I was tricked and given a taste of pure chilli in a paste- safe to say I nearly died. I ran to the nearest liquor stall to dull the fire in my mouth and any hope of blending in quickly vanished. I then decided to leave the food section and look the the jewellery. It was going well until I got my top knot stuck in some necklaces dangling above! The lady selling the jewellery looked panicked, the few men who helped set me free looked amused and I looked like a bright red lanky twat. I gave up at this point and did the only thing. Felt comfortable doing- found an English speaking roof top bar where I drank beer, listened to Celene Dion being played from the speakers and updated my Instagram story to make it look like I was having a cool time. Ohhh the deceptions of social media.
The next day was the arrival of Jess and Chelsea (the Kiwis). I was sooo excited to see them that I even managed to stay awake until 10.30 pm when they arrived! We then went crazy yolo (went to sleep) the fun had begun!!
The three of us spent the day back in the markets (this time wearing jeans and a black tshirt on attempted to look less British). There was some fabulous traditional Mexican dance going on in the markets- we decided we would become pros in salsa by the end of this trip. We then waltzes around the streets looking at the beautiful buildings and really soaking up the culture... until we found ourselves being sucked into Forever 21- classic. Determined to not be sucked into more places we can find at home we found a gorj local Mexican restaurant for lunch with tacos and guacamole DEEEELISH!!! The rest of the day was spent in roof top bars feeling like gorj glam darlens and of course updating our social media to prove how much fun we were having (how els would people know otherwise).
At one point we heard a siren and were told to evacuate the bar and go outside as it was the earth quake warning siren. However nothing came of it and we were soon aloud back into the bar to enjoy our £2 cocktails. The next night we embarked on our first night bus journey to Palenque!! The bus was nice and a gorj boy sat next to me which is walkways a plus. Of course I didn't actually speak to him though! I'm far to awkward and he probz only spoke Spanish but a girl can dream.
It wasn't until we had to get off the bus briefly and got wifi that we were bombarded by messages asking if we were ok. Little did we know there had been a major earth quake across Mexican. The bus was so bloody bumpy that we didn't feel a thing. We all feel extremely lucky we weren't effected by the earthquake and all my thoughts are with those effected.
Now we are nearly in Pelenque.... a place of jungle and temples. Let's see shall we.
