What? No free brekky at the Best Western? That's a b*****, having to pay for it for once!!!
So we headed off to the famous San Diego Zoo and found it was only a couple of kilometres away - huge free parking lot and after buying our tickets we grabbed a coffee and a bite to eat and then set off exploring. Luckily for us, most of the schools have resumed after the summer holidays, the crowd was light and we were able to get a bus tour around the huge place and get our bearings.
We then wandered for a couple of hours, looking at all the great animal exhibits in their various natural looking surrounds. They really have done a great job making the zoo look as natural as possible. We took the chairlift across the zoo and saw most of the animals, but it was quite hot and humid and by about 1pm we had seen enough and departed for a look at downtown San Diego. The tourist brochures had mentioned an area called the Gaslamp District which was near the city proper and we found it and some parking quite easily and had a wander among the many restaurants and bars!
Greg and I had wanted to get haircuts, and when we came across a good old fashioned barber shop in a shopping mall we took the chance to have a trim! Well, it was meant to be a trim but by the time I had realised what the barber was doing he had run a number 2 up the side of my head and from there on there was no turning back!!!!!!! So I finished up having a seriously sharp cut that will take a month or two to grow back to normal, but never mind it is very easy to look after!
We returned to the motel for a shower etc. and then returned later on, after the traffic had calmed down, to the Gaslamp District where we found an Irish Pub that had a great menu and we enjoyed a beaut dinner!
Tomorrow we will look over the USS Midway museum and then head back to LA for our last 2 nights.
