A fine and clear day greeted us, after a bit of a sleep-in we had breakfast and then drove into town and put the car through a car wash and vac to get rid of the tell tale dust after our Monument Valley misadventure! That accomplished we stopped at a Safeway to get some wipes and gave the interior a going over as well - the Dodge was like new again!
Starbucks for a coffee and then we had a walk around town, where they have really jumped on the Route 66 bandwagon and there were many stores selling all the Chinese made memorabilia that has been prominent along the route!
Couldn't help but notice that a few of the locals had ridden their quad bikes to town - they're a bit feral around here - there was even a Polaris filling up at the gas station!
We hit the road again and followed the old road for a couple of hundred Kms, passing many deserted settlements that the guide books describe as "treasures", but once again that was a vast untruth! There's not much treasure in these places I can assure you!
Got to Kingman around mid afternoon and stopped at the local information centre which also houses a very informative museum on Route 66! It was based on the story of how the route became famous - not all the crap about old cars, servos and neon signs! The road was the only pathway for settlers heading west, seeking new areas to settle as the population in the east forced the poorer ones out! The stories of the hardships they went through made for great reading and was a blessed relief from all the other stuff!
We decided to stay in Kingman the night and found a lovely motel amongst many very dodgy ones and settled in - it may have been one of our more expensive stops, but hey, that's better than cockroaches!
Tomorrow we head further west into California again - have to travel through the arid desert region before we get back into cooler coastal climes! We think we will head south on Sunday and make a detour to San Diego and have a look at the famous zoo, before returning to Santa Monica to finish the Road Trip!
