After leaving Quilpie, we had discussed stopping the night at the Roadhouse at Cooladdi. We arrived here at 2.30pm, hadn't had any lunch and at looking at the camp area, we decided to stop for lunch at the roadhouse and then move on.
The Cooladdi Roadhouse is run by a mother and daughter team, it has pig trophies hanging off the walls, you can buy souvenirs, meals and drinks but no fuel. We ordered a hamburger each, huge mistake…. The burgers were massive, one would have been plenty for the two of us. Yes we rolled out of the place with very full bellies, so no dinner for us tonight.
We arrived at Charleville and headed straight out to the Rock Pools, 11km east of Charleville, being a Saturday afternoon everything was closed up. The camp spot we had at the Rock Pools was the best, we were overlooking the one and only rock pool. We got chatting to one of our neighbours, so when they went into town the following morning in their car, we kept and eye out on their motorhome. The favour was returned on Monday, when we went into town to catch up on washing, shopping, fill up one gas bottle and then into the Cosmo Centre to pay for our night booking.
We arrived back to the same site, as our neighbors had parked their car beside our seats and table.
About 3.30pm Sue, Gavin, Mitchell & Saartje (Al) arrived, we had discussed our travel plans and Sue & Gavin who were heading to the Birdsville Races. We were heading east, they were heading west on the same highway. Great opportunity to catch up with old friends, we enjoyed the afternoon catching up, an early dinner and then we all headed back into Charleville for our night viewing at the Cosmos Centre & Observatory. They opened up the roof of the observatory and thank god they had blankets, it was such a cold evening. There is four massive telescopes, to which everyone is invited up to view the following:
Alpha Centrauri, Jewel Box, Albireo - Double star, Saturn and the Moon. It was a great one hour show. We arrived back at camp, stoked the fire and sat around enjoying the company.
The following morning we parted ways. We headed into Morven, the museum wasn't open, so we decided to move onto Mitchell. At Mitchell we stopped for two nights at the Neil Turner Weir.
At Roma, the first thing we smelt on stepping out of DABUS was the smell of cattle. A lot of cattle must be trucked through this town. Roma's streets are lined with beautiful bottle trees. We moved onto a rest stop along side Balonne River at Surat. The days are still blue clear skies with mid 20's, yet the nights have been very cold -2 overnight.
Arriving at St George, we obtained a few items before driving south through Nindigully, where the free camp beside the pub was very busy. Onto Thallon and checked out the painted grain solos before stopping the night at Two Miles Pub north of Mungindi, which is on the QLD/NSW border. Pub meal for dinner tonight and we head into NSW tomorrow morning.
