Last time I updated I had just arrived in San Sebastian. It's been a week now and lots has happened, I absolutely love it here, I don't want to leave, I'm desperately trying to change buses so that i can stay a few extra days, I've already planned to come back and sussed out some jobs. Got two lines up one in the busabout recommended hostel and one in the hostel jake my friend works in and that I'm staying in now. It's just got everything I like, a good beach, nice weather, the Spanish culture and language, good food, and the opportunity to have an active lifestyle.
My days here have been spent at the beach, wandering the cobbled streets of old town, eating the amazing pinxtos, hiking mountains to explore ruins and fortresses and admiring amazing views from the top of mountains. Annie and I have spent our time here well, we have been lucky with good weather and met a lot of cool people to spend time with through the hostel jake works at.
My birthday was so unique! It was hard spending it away from family and friends but I am so lucky and grateful to be spending it in Spain and with Annie! She really made it a special day! We woke up relatively early (which was hard in our amazing cloud beds) and headed down for the amazing hotel buffet that Annie treated me to, I ate so much and even had some champagne! after breakfast we sent some time soaking up the sun beside the pool, read our books and worked on our tans. It was a nice lazy morning. Early afternoon we strolled down to the surf beach following the now all to familiar coastline. We lazed on the beach for an hour or so and had a surf lesson with jake! Annie got up pretty easily and showed me up straight away, I wasn't so successful and after an hour walked defeated up the beach to a very amused jake. It was a lot of fun though and got me inspired to get into surfing! Hence my passion and motivation to stay in San Sebastian to work at the end of the year.
For dinner Annie and I did something very unique and traditional in basque country, San Sebastian is famous for its cider, so we joined a tour and went to a cider house for an amazing five course meal and all you can drink cider. It was so much fun and I even got sing happy birthdays by the table and even a few fellow diners at the cider house!
It was such a cool way to spend my 22nd birthday, defiantly won't forget this one!
The day after my birthday annie and I had to check out of our hotel room. Annie headed for a flight which would connect to her flight back to Australia and I reluctantly carried my backpack down the hill to join Jakes hostel.
The rest of my days in San Sebastian have been really fun, the crew here at the hostel are always up and going. We took a trip to the boarder of France for the day. It was a pretty unsuccessful trip, we spent most of our time at bus stops and train stations or walking around lost. We were meant to be watching a parade in a small Spanish town but were misinformed and arrived over three hours early. It was cool to see a little village but not worth the trouble. That night though there was a music festival on the peak of a hill in San sebastian! It was such a cool atmosphere, lots of good music and an absolutely breath taking view. With stunning coastline one way and then the view of San Sebastian city, the small island and the Jesus statue to the other. It was so fun spending the night just hanging out and admiring the city lights. For dinner the boys put their faith in me to recommend a burger place hidden away in the backstreets, it was a success and soon we were all silently scoffing down burgers! I then took them to an ice creamery where they ate way too much ice cream, it's defiantly the best in town (no comparison to Italy though), maybe I'll be an ok local here after all.
Next day was a late start and a lazy end, we just spent the day on the beach and talking a lot of rubbish. That night was a chilled one, just eating at an amazing buffet where you full a plate with fresh seafood, veggies, and meat and then take it to the chef to cook up! So much fun. After dinner we heavily and slowly walked to a rock wall to
Drink the local alcoholic drink callimucho which is just red wine and coke, a little bit of orange to be fancy! It's delicious but puts me in a real lethargic relaxed mood. So we headed back to the hostel for a chilled night of downloading movies and hanging out in the dorm room. I love it here! Don't know if I've stressed that enough!
