Okay, so we're now seven and a half hours into the bus ride. We just left Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, which turned out to be quite a bizarre place. Much like La Paz in Bolivia, it's surrounded by mountains, and sort of comes at you from nowhere. The centre of it seems very Americanized with modern looking shopping malls and several chain restaurants, but then rising up all around it are what look like shanti towns. It wasn't what I expected at all, but I'm still happy to not be staying.
I'm beginning to think that someone at the Ticabus company must have read my last blog from South America. I had mentioned on a long ride through Peru how much I enjoyed the Spanish movies, remade in the States and then dubbed back into Spanish. Wouldn't you know they played Once Upon a Time in Mexico and have just put on Desperado- mucho Antonio Banderas take dos!!
Anyways, we returned to the mainland yesterday and went straight from the airport to Leon. We'd heard mixed reviews about the place and were curious. It seemed like a bit of a cross between Granada and Masaya- some ornate old churches and central square, but not as kept up and charming as Granada. We had a very odd experience with the place though. Being that our only day there was a Sunday, everything closed…and I do mean everything! The churches were closed, so we couldn't climb up the towers; the bakeries and restaurants were taking their day of rest, so we couldn't try any special foods. The shops were all closed, so we couldn't stock up on last minute keepsakes. Luckily the hostel was open and served food. We were also fortunate to have found a bus agent that could sell us tickets to get out.
The long and the short of it is that I have very little to say about the place. We opted not to go volcano boarding (a main attraction here). Though I will admit I'm still curious, a fear of serious injury, paired with time constraints has held me back. I'll guess I'll just have to find some other way to challenge and scare myself. I don't imagine that will be too difficult to work out.
Since we still have three or four hours until we arrive in San Pedro Sula, I think I'm going to take advantage of the fact that my netbook is still holding a charge and watch an episode of Firefly. Tomorrow we'll be going to see our first Mayan Ruins of the trip. Hooray!!
Hasta la vista babies!!
