After another Lawson breakfast, we caught the bus past the pampas fields to Togendai, and got on the replica "pirate" ship to Hakone Machi. It was raining a little but not cold, so we visited the old Sekisho (checkpoint) where they used to stop people bringing guns into Edo (Tokyo) and women running away from feudal lords (says so on the info board). From there we followed the very picturesque Cedar trail for 30 mins to the next town of Moto Hakone, where there was an excellent bakery for lunch. I had a kind of panini with chicken and fried lotus root - amazing!
Next a walk along the pretty path along the side of the hill next to the lake to the huge red Torii gates for a photo opportunity. This marks the entrance to a shrine that sits across the road in the forest. A wonderful place.
We returned via ship and bus to our hotel to read for a while before our family bath (could get very used to this!), donned our yukatas and back for a huge dinner downstairs with multiple courses topped of with thinly sliced pork for Shabu Shabu. Yum.
