The next morning, we ventured to the local "Lawson" convenience store for yoghurt, croissants, juice and coffee, and took them back to our room. It was a humid, foggy morning - quite beautiful. We watched the gorgeous scenery from our bus ride to Gora and Chokoku-no-Mori and the Hakone Open Air Museum. There has been no expense spared on this place, and our info pamphlet describes it as creating a 'harmonious balance of nature and art with views of the surrounding valley and mountains'. Spot on! The first statue after the escalators took us downstairs and out to the gardens was Rodin's statue of Balzac, alongside many Japanese and European sculptures. There was a 2-story Picasso pavilion with plenty of paintings, photos, ceramic works etc, and several other galleries. While these were brilliant, the whole family's favourite thing was the sprawling terraced gardens with rainforest walks, a star labyrinth and bridges over pretty waterfalls. Gorgeous way to spend a few hours. A quick lunch in the cafe, a soak in the hot foot bath to soothe weary feet, and off we went to Gora to catch the funicular up the mountain to Sounzan. From here, transport changed yet again to a Cable Car over the volcano, complete with rotten egg gas, yellow sulphur and steam vents. There was a look out over it at Owakudani where we stopped for 20 mins, before getting back on the cable car to Togendai, which sits on the Lake (Ashi). Some touristy replicas of 18th century British naval ships left here for the other side, 20km away. Best left til tomorrow. Back to Sengkuhara on the bus, another family hot bath, and we ventured out into the small town to find something for dinner- not actually that easy as most of them took Wed/Thurs off. We wandered into Cafe 0460, with a few elderly gents sitting at the bar redolent of the "Youth Club" in Jack Irish series, and smoking. We were very worried about what sort of food would come out but we couldn't have been more pleased with homemade pizza for the kids and homemade burgers (sans rolls), miso, rice and salad. Back to our room for a game of Uno.
