Awoke early to be ready for pick up at 7amby Maria, our guide. We headed off for a Cusco city tour. Four of the sites we visited were Inka ruins. During the Ink a Empire, Cusco was the capital, so there are many Inka ruins in the surrounding area. All the sites were almost totally destroyed by the Spanish Conquistadors in a bid to quash the Ink a relegion in favour of their own Catholocism.
The first was a temple/fort,high above Cusco city. There is only a fraction of it standing, being the foundations, of I massively large rocks fitted together immaculately. There was a herd of Alapca's grazing in the surrounding fields.
The second was a place where it is thought the Inka's worshipped and made offerings to the Earth God.
The next was further out of town, The Red Fort with is overlapping battlements and false entry points.
The last was a temple to the Water God, and resting place for travellers along an Inka Trail, where they could fill their water containers. It is set in a low hill where the a spring flows constantly, but the source is not known.
Back in Cusco we visited the convent of 'Santo Domingo' built on the ruins of an Ink a Temple. It is a mixture of both Inka and Colonial architecture.
Lastly we visited the Basicilica Cathedral in the Plaza de Arm as, the main plaza in the city. Inside was a wealth of religious art, ornately decorated with gold and silver, as well as solid timber carvings and panelling.
We then transferred to the airport about lunchtime for another long day and night of flights, to Rio De Janiero.
