Next stop Lom. Up over the mountains again, tunnel after hairpin bend and on and on. Vanda is starting to dread to mountain roads and prefers tunnels as she can’t see the drops off the side like on the roads! Snow up here again at 1400 m. We have to stop at a tunnel due to roadworks and get chatting to a workman who tells us that Norway is having a terrible summer so far, perhaps that’s why we’re wearing the thermals we brought along for Svalbard. Took a local ferry today, they haven’t put bridges everywhere yet, nice break and different view of the fjords.
Did some hiking at Lom, following the old irrigation system. Very interesting, all dug by hand. Seems to be plenty of water here though they say Lom is the Sahara of Norway.
Had a great day with a guide searching for Musk Ox that live in the Dovre national park. The Musk Ox were bought here from Greenland about 100 years ago and now there is aherd of about 240. We found a lone male eating on a small river island and then a group with calves cooling off on a patch of snow. It was about 8 degrees and they were getting too hot. Great day.
Next off to Åndalsnes. Great camp site surrounded by mountains topped with snow. Did a great hike to a view point looking down on the town and our campsite. Weather getting warmer and sunnier.
Yesterday we moved on to Runde island famous for its bird colonies. We had a great day and evening watching the gannets, razorbills, cormorants, puffins and eagles. I saw a whale and vanda saw a sea otter.
Today we took a ferry along gerainger fjord, combining a ferry with a sightseeing cruise. Lovely but I have to admit the fantastic scenery is just getting too much.
