We flew back from Svalbard overnight, it made no real difference there as it was still light at 2.30 am when we left. Got back to Connie in Oslo at about 5 am and set off toward Flam on the Sognefjorden. After a couple of hours we pulled into a picnic area and took a few hours sleep. Great to be able to stop, pull the blinds and go to bed.
Took about 5 hrs in all to get to Flam, the main roads are good but the local roads are torturous - windy & quite narrow in places. We drove through several tunnels including the world’s longest road tunnel at 24km, Vanda thought we were going to visit Middle Earth. Excellent campsite overlooking the fjord at Flam, but expensive (why am I surprised, this is Norway). Weather good & we enjoyed a boat trip on Naeroyfjord (narrow fjord) a UNESCO world heritage site on an electric boat that is powered by hydro electric power & is probably the most environmentally boat you could get. There’s space for 400 tourists but luckily there were only about 80 of us. Next was the famous Flam train trip - one of the top 10 most beautiful train trips in the world. The train climbs 1200 metres up the mountainside, through 20 tunnels, for 20 km, & stops by a lovely waterfall where a mystical lady in red dances to entice men to stay in the mountains with her (a bit weird!).
Next stop Eidfjord...
