We set off to Luzembourg, the border was non existent as is typical in Europe and I think rather refreshing, open and welcoming. Perhaps unlike the UK? The first thing we noticed were the ‘deer bridges’ across the motorways - wide flyovers with trees and bushes to encourage the deer to use them instead of risking crossing the road. Not sure how the deer know where they are, but we hope they’re successful as a wildlife corridor (better than seeing all the shooting towers in fields across Germany, Sweden & Norway which are used to shoot the deer!). We were heading for a campsite just outside the capital but the road was closed just 1 km from the site. Sally took us on a 15 km detour and tried to send us down a traffic free cycle path, but we got there in the end. It seems that Luxemburg is doing as much big construction work as we saw in Germany.
There was a free bus service to the city and we spent the day looking around the various sights. The city is built on a the meeting of two valleys and so this gives it a cliff edge profile for its castle, massive defence walls and historic buildings. The Bock promontory made an interesting visit and a change from the normal sights, it’s a series of tunnels, carved out of the cliffs, that was a fort when Luxembourg was first founded. We had a great day, despite the wet grey day.
We’ve booked our return ferries to the UK and the Island and so for the first time in over a month, we have a schedule to keep. So, we left Luxembourg and headed for Ghent in Belgium. Found a great campsite with a free shuttle bus into the city. Ghent is a lovely town and full of great sights, better than Bruges in our view.
Onto Calais and another campsite, our last in Europe, before the ferry to Dover and the drive home.
We’ve had a great time but we’re looking forward to getting home now that autumn has set in & seeing everyone. Craig’s looking forward to more space, a bigger bed and the garden. Vanda’s looking forward to a bath. We’re both looking forward to getting a pet cat.
