Sue kindly gave up her time to show us the sights of Copenhagen on a really hot sunny Friday. First stop was the famous Little Mermaid (which really is little) surrounded by tourists from the cruise ships that moor up nearby. The harbour front & dockside are lovely to walk along & have been modernised since the ships/ferries have been moved out of the city. It was strange to see the locals sunbathing on the piers in the middle of the city (don’t think we’d be so keen to jump into the Thames on a hot day to cool off!). We watched the changing of the guards at the royal palaces, & heard that the royal family can often be seen in shops & events, including running events that the Prince competes in- without obvious security. They seem a very down to earth royal family. We took a scenic boat trip to see the main sights from the water - it reminded us of Amsterdam with the pretty buildings lining the canals. Then we headed to the food market for a delicious lunch of veggie/chicken balti & frozen lemonade. Managed to find a seat in the shade to shelter from the searing sun..
We ended our day at Tivoli Gardens, the worlds oldest amusement park. Set on a block in the city with amazing ornate entrances the park is a must do for any visitors to the city (aka a tourist trap!). It cost us £25 each to enter the park & that doesn’t include any rides. The park does have some pretty green spaces & a lake, but is mostly rides & expensive restaurants. We enjoyed watching the thrill seekers scream from varying heights, but for us, the highlight was a gig by a band called Mads Langer who played some good music, although the rain had started & we had to buy pink pack-a-macs to keep dry!
We enjoyed some real Danish hospitality when Sue & Thomas kindly invited us for dinner, then it was time to move on to explore more of Denmark..
