A couple of hours drive past Hamburg brought us to Puttgarden on the north German coast. From here we took the ferry to Rodby on the south Danish coast. A 45min trip at a cost of €97 for those of you that think the Isle of Wight ferries are expensive! We could get duty free though.
A further 2 hour drive and we arrived at Charlottenlund fort campsite just to the north of Copenhagen. The site is inside the defences of a fort on the shoreline, complete with cannons and guns. We were met by Sue, a friend of Judy, Vanda’s friend from home. Sue has been great, showing us round the area, giving us tips on the Danish ways and being a guide around Copenhagen. It’s great to have local knowledge.
We spent Thursday (13th) visiting 2 Castles, Fredericksburg Slot and Kornborg Slot. Fredericksburg was our favourite, it’s a massive palace castle from the 1600’s with moat, formal gardens, banquet halls; the full royal works. Take a look at the photos and you’ll see what I mean. Then onto Hellsinger for Korborg Slot except that Sally (the satnav) got a bit confused and it took us three loops around the town to get there! Once there we walked around the castle which is a massive defensive castle with not much inside. Again spectacular architecture. Shakespeare’s Hamlet was based here and they make great play of the fact. The town of Hellsinger is a lovely old town and we spent a couple of hours wandering here, lots of bargain booze shops (by Danish standards) to tempt the Swedish tourists from just across the water. Stopped for tea and Danish pastry, got chatting to some french and Belgiums and they wanted to know why on earth we were leaving the EU, we couldn’t tell them.
