Sorry it's been so long since I have added a blog post but the last few weeks have been pretty hectic. After leaving Magnetic Island me and Steve made our way to Airlie beach where we spent 2 nights on a racing boat called Broomstick and sailed around the Witsunday Islands. We had a really good group of 25 people on the boat and 3 crew members, which made the trip even better. The skipper was even from Portsmouth! We were even allowed to help sail the boat, winding winches, raising sails etc. All great fun. The few days basically consisted of sailing about and snorkelling the day and watching the sunset with a few beers in the evening. The main attraction was when we went to Whitehaven beach, which is meant to be one of the top 5 in the world. The place was stunning as my pictures hopefully show. Sleeping on the boat was also an experience, thankfully on the 2nd night we dropped anchor at a much calmer spot than the first night. From Airlie beach we covered 1100k in just over a day in order to get to Rainbow beach, the gateway to Fraser Island. On arrival at the hostel we met our group and watched the mandatory safety videos about going on the Island. Our group of 11 consisted of 2 fit French girls, a fit Dutch girl, 2 hilarious Belgium boys, 2 London lads and 2 girls from Southampton. We were really lucky with our group. Once everyone had met we had to go shopping to last us 3 days on the island, it wasn't easy but we got there in the end. We were going to be given a 4x4 to take on the Island, which only 3 of us could drive as the others were either too young or couldn't drive. I won a game of rock, paper, scissors and chose to drive first in the morning. To spare you the boring details, for 3 days we essentially drove along beaches, through forests, along dirt tracks and camped out by the beach in the evening. One of the highlights was Lake Mackenzie, a stunning place full of freshwater in the middle of an island. The Dingoes that kept stalking around our camps in the evening were also entertaining. Overall we had a great few days on the island and somehow survived to tell the tail. From Rainbow beach we made our way to Noosa, which was a really nice place to just chill out for a couple of days recovering from all the action of the last week. On our first night there we treated ourselve and ate at a beachside restaurant that had been featured in Vogue magazine very nice. After a couple of days on the beach and walking through the national park (where we saw turtles swimming in the sea) we made our way to Australia Zoo, home of the crocodile hunter. The place was absolutely quality but seemed to lack something due to the obvious absence of Steve Irwin. Coming here you realise what a big deal he was and how sorely he is missed. The tribute avenue to him at the Crocoseum was very touching and showed what a true legend he really was. It was a great day as we got to stroke Kangaroo's and koala's, watch tigers perform and see the crocs. It was however great to see that the legacy of Steve Irwin still continues. From Australia Zoo we made our way to Brisbane for the night and had a great night at the Casino, not gambling and watching live music. It was a great place.
