Arriving in Phi Phi port was nothing like I expected. It was commericalised and there seemed to be a lot of people. To be honest initially I was a little disappointed...I thought it was going to be a lot like Fiji. I was wrong! Anyway, we found a little guesthouse to stay in and all was dandy. The beach was beautiful and it was so hard to imagine that only in 2003 the Tsunami has ripped through this small, stunning island and pretty much destroyed everything. There are still many building works going on now. The best thing about Phi Phi is that there are no motorised vehicles or roads so you wont get run over..for a change!
I manged to bump into Claire and Dean who I'd met in Laos and they'd been in Phi Phi a week and loved. After our first night there I was in love with the place. The bars and restaurants were brilliant and the people were so friendly. We even managed to make friends with people in our guesthouse who were northern lads and James was so happy that he'd finally found some boy mates to hang out with. We went to the beach, it really was amazing. It was so nice to finally have some sunshine! In the evening time we would all sit outside one of our rooms and buy buckets of Sangsom and M150 and play drinking games before going out. There was a good irish bar called Jordans which is where the night usually started, follwed by maybe the Thai boxing place, Hippies or Apache. Such good nights out. On one of our nights out we met Shannon who was Scottish and on her own as she was on her way home for a bit well, everyone was faffing about outside 7/11 and I was desperate for the loo and she said, I'm only staying here so you can use my loo. She was staying in a really nice room. I used her loo and then we ended up drinking and eating pringles in her room. I woke up at 7am the next day....next to Shannon! We had fallen asleep and I hadnt even told the others where I was! Once we had managed to feel slightly more human Shannon and I went back to my guesthouse to get Laura for some well needed hang over saving breakfast. It was absolutely pouring with rain and we were actually quite relieved as we all felt like crap. We monged out the whole day and felt so much better for it!
Halloween was such a good night out. Our northern boys were dressing up as women and I was chosen as their make up artist.... they looked so funny! Lois and James dressed up as pirates and after much deliberation at 10pm Laura and I decided to dress up as army girls. All this involved was wearing a camo head band and putting loads of black on our faces! We played drinking games (as per usual) and then headed out. One of the lads decided to carry me fireman style into Jordans nearly knocking everyone out with my feet! it was such a hilarious night, after Jordans we went to Hippies where we all put fluro paint on ourselves so we glowed in the dark. I lost everyone, including laura..I didnt really care as I had met some hilarious people and we were all messing about doing silly dancing and playing pool! I then decided to go to Apache, dragging a few others along with me, I bumped into some Yorkshire lads we had met previously so I knew I was now safe! Apache was heaving and it was brilliant, it's a bar on the beach and there are fire shows and all sorts. We didnt get to bed until around 7am, it was a mental but amazing night!
On one of the other days that we were there we booked a trip to Maya Bay with the boys which is where the film 'The Beach' is filmed. The trip included a few other things too. We went to a little island just off Phi Phi which had little monkies living there so we looked at those and took a few snaps. We also had quite a few snorkelling spots. The first spot was pretty good and I finally got to see a shark! It was a really nice warm sunny day so the sea was crystal clear and all the fishes were out to play! The second spot was amazing, words probably cant describe what an experience it was. We followed our little old Thai man, who was so cute, bless him, wearing speedo's! We follwed him around a large rock and I have never seen fish or coral like it. There were tons of barracudas, shoals of fish so huge that they only parted enough for you to swim through. It was gorgeous.
We were then taken to a lagoon, which was breathtaking. The water some how seemed thick and it was extremely dark, we decided to have a quick dip before heading to the cliff jumping. There were 3 different cliff jumps, one was around 3/4 metres, one of 10 metres and one was 18 metres. We had heard some horror stories about them but you dont really believe them as a lot of people talk a lot of crap. Where the tide was going out the jumps were quite a bit higher than we were told. The highest jump must have ended up being way over 20 metres. Lois and I were pretty scared so decided to do the small one and Laura being Laura went for the highest. Luke jumped off the high one and was fine. Laura jumped and at the time I was standing behind Lois waiting to jump from my smaller jump. Something was wrong with Laura... I swore at Lois to hurry up and jump and I bascially pushed her and threw myself off and then swam as fast as I could to Laura. Meanwhile the little speedo thai man had got to her. There was something serious wrong with her. Her finger was badly dislocated but she couldnt breathe properly and was in a lot of pain. We managed ot get her into the boat and she laid down. We had to continue round to Maya Bay to see it at sunset. Laura told Lois and I (who were going to wait with her in the boat) to go and we went to Maya Bay and it was absolutely gorgeous. No wonder they used it for the film. It was a lot smaller than I had imagined but gorgeous. We got back to the boat and it was getting dark, I knew we had to take Laura straight to hospital and luckily there was a small one near the port.
Myself and the little speedo Thai man took Laura to the hospital, it was awful, she was in so much pain I could have cried for her. We got her into the hospital and they checked her over. They didnt have any x-ray facilities but thought that she had broken ribs and sternum. She was pumped of drugs and everytime she tried to get up she almost passed out. She stayed the night in the hospital and I had gone back to the guesthouse to get her some dry clothes and also I needed some dry clothes and a shower oh and I was sick too. I went back there with some food and drink for her to take her medication. After about 10pm there was no one about and Laura was feeling really sick so I managed to find someone and they gave me a waste paper bin, with rubbish still in it for her to chuck up in! I couldnt believe it!! I dumped the rubbish and I even had to clean out the bin after she's thrown up in it!!! I am not good with vomit and as I had been sick earlier that evening it did not make me feel any better! After the night in the hospital Laura left on a funny motocycle side car thing with me perched on it. As I previously said, Phi Phi has no roads so we had to go a really odd way back to the guesthouse! We made the decision to leave the next day to go back to the mainland to get her checked out at a proper hospital.
I had fallen in love with Phi Phi, it's such a great place and I would definitely go back on holiday. The beaches are gorgeous, the nightlife lively and the people are lovely... so sad to be going....
