Ha long bay is Vietnam's greatest natural wonder with thousands of rocks rising from the clear waters. It covers an area of 1,553 sq. km with 1,969 islands. We spent the day on a boat touring around and taking in the spectacular views and natural beauty. Our tour guide informed us of the legend of Ha Long Bay which literally translates as "bay of descending dragons", in short the story goes that a long time ago the viet people were being attacked by foreign aggressors and a mother dragon and a herd of children dragons were sent to help the viet people, as the dragons descended they spat out pearls at the enemies these turned into jade rocks and formed islands, the viet people won and Ha Long bay was formed.
We explored some caves on one of the islands admiring the rock formation and imagining objects and animals out of the many stalactites formed there. It was very impressive although personally I felt the colored artificial lights placed in the caves slightly detracted from the natural wonder of the place.
Back on the boat we continued to enjoy the views and a seafood banquet as well! Ha Long was undoubtably beautiful, however I would loved to have seen it on a clearer day, it was rather cloudy.
We spent the evening in ha long, where... There is nothing to do. I would recommend visiting Ha Long bay to everyone, however I would suggest you stay in Hanoi and visit as day trip.
