Today we started our city tour by seeing the Little Mermaid, a Copenhagen icon. This small life sized bronze statue made in 1913 by Edvard Eriksen, depicts a mermaid from the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen. Next we saw one of the largest monuments in Copenhagen, the imposing Gefion Fountain, given to the city by the Carlsberg (brewery) Foundation. This monument is based on the Norse Goddess Gefion who swings her whip over her sons, whom she changed into the oxen, as she was offered as much land as she could plough in one day and night by Swedish King Gylfe. She and her sons did their job so well that they created the island on which Copenhagen is situated. Continuing with the tour we next visited Christianborg Palace, is the seat of parliament , the Prime Ministers office, the Supreme Court, and the monarchy has rooms there to receive special visitors, along with the royal stables and the Palace Chapel. A very well maintained and impressive palace and the vibrant wool tapestries are so beautiful and meaningful. Are we done walking yet, oh no not even half done. As we take to the streets teeming with people, bicycles, and baby prams, we head along the Stroget, Copenhagen's main shopping street which is the longest pedestrian street in the world and start meandering until we find the Church of our Lady also known as Copenhagen's Cathedral. At the front of the church is a marble statue of Christ and baptismal font guarded by an Angel, the twelve apostles line the sides each representing their own personal symbol are also marble. We rounded off our day of sight seeing by spending the next five hours navigating by ourselves the complicated streets, side streets and alleys of Copenhagen in order to tour the National Museum of Denmark and Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. 20,000 steps total today needed a reward which we found at our hotel's complimentary wine, beer, and snack hour in the executive lounge which is a great perk for guests with suites (thank you Odysseys Unlimited) after a long and enjoyable day.

Mary We have seen the little mermaid too...in Kimbalton, Iowa. The real statue would be far superior. Tivoli gardens sounded like fun. Glad you and Keith are being wined and dined in style!
Jeff & Howard Howard and I saw the little mermaid in Copenhagen on a tour I guess the statue has been stolen a number of times. Smaller than we thought. Did u take a canal ride? So jealous!
