The day started rainy so we decided to forgo the motorhome show at the Holiday Park. Fortunately, we saw most of the vehicles last evening and there weren't many large motorhomes. Campgrounds are plentiful in NZ, but the campsites are not equipped with "full hookups." And campervans are more suited to the narrow winding roads.
Partway between Nelson and Picton, we stopped at the scenic reserve of Pelorus Bridge for lunch. The rain had almost stopped so we took two short hikes. The first was into the bush crossing the Pelorus River on another long swinging bridge.
The second walk was through the rainforest, covered with many tree ferns including the silver tree fern. The silver tree fern is the national symbol seen on the jerseys of many sports teams in New Zealand. It is green on top but has a very silver underside (see photo). This hike also took us by a huge totara tree. These trees were favored by the Maori for their war canoes and can live to be 1000 years old.
As we traveled farther we passed scenic farmland and many vineyards.
We arrived in Picton and checked in to the Top 10 Holiday Park. We changed our ferry reservation from Monday to tomorrow afternoon, because of rain predicted for Monday. We want a sunny day for our voyage. This might also give us a little time to explore Picton tomorrow morning and Wellington on Monday morning.
