Franz Josef is small but very pretty. We stayed at Glow Worm Cottages hostel just for two nights as we had booked to do a full day hike of the Franz Josef glacier. It was an eight hour hike with six hours in total on the ice - which is quite a long time especially when you are cold and wet! Even though we were aching all over the next day and the day after that it was definitely worth it. The trip started with an hour walk through the valley before getting to the glacier itself. Stopped for around half an hour for lunch then carried on going up the glacier. Went in a couple of really cool caves than had appeared only a few days before - as the ice melts they qucikly disappear so we were lucky to see two. It took only a couple of hours to come back down and needless to say we both felt relieved to arrive back at the bus and then back to the office to remove our massive hiking boots and crampons!
