It rained overnight- wasn’t a problem as we left our accommodation and walked towards the station. We found a cafe and had a coffee and some breakfast and then it pelted down with rain as we left and walked toward the station. It was like a bucket of water was tipped over us the rain was that intense . We were drowned rats buying tickets to Ercolano Scavi and Herculaneum where we would do a tour .
Herculaneum is a smaller version of the aftermath of the volcanic explosion of 79AD. It’s a beautifully preserved site that uncovered 300 skeletons that were crowded together in fishing storage sheds and ultimately died from the heat furnace. Herculaneum was converted in lava and mud which preserved much of its history in tact. It was a great tour.
We walked back to the station and grabbed some panini on the way to catch the train to Sorrento.
We caught a taxi from the station that dropped us off at the via Marina Grande…..which was great but he dropped us in the wrong spot. I had to lug 40kgs of bags up 250m of steep climb unto we got to our accommodation.
Our accom is so very perfect - just down the same stairs to a georgeous little beach and marina filled with restaurants and little shops and a great little bar perched on the hill overlooking the beach.A great base for the next 4 nights.
We explored the town wandering around the little streets and alleyways and found a lovely restaurant to enjoy dinner.
More exploring Sorrento tomorrow and off to Capri as well.
