I've just landed India completely exhausted. I think I've had about 5 hours snatched sleep on planes since Thursday night.
I'm now at the Chennai central railway station at 2am. I'm pretty damn sure that I'm the only Anglo here and there are hundreds of people. The station police go around and wake up all the sleeping bodies on the cement floor to check they have a current ticket. If they don't have a ticket they get beaten with a stick and asked to move on. Yep. Already seen that happen a few times in an hour. As you'd expect the station police consists of some tough looking guys, but surprisingly there's also almost as many tiny women. They attempt more vocal intimidation than actual violence by the looks of things. But they still carry sticks.
The police aren't too bad. They let the two blind men who are friends stay and they set up some cardboard for them to sleep on.
Of course, my train has decided it won't actually stop at this station on it's 2 day journey. My next wonderful travel hurdle is to catch an urban train to a different station. I'm loathe to leave this one. Despite the police with sticks...at least there are police with sticks? And I have discovered an internet cafe open at this ridiculous hour. I'll start taking pictures soon but I'm very much in culture shock mode and don't want flaunt the obvious difference in wealth by taking out a camera.
I think I'm almost delirious with tiredness. Thank God. Otherwise I might realise how vulnerable I am and panic.

Shazbang Very pleased that you have made it that far. Maybe some advice for other travellers would be to get your own police uniform and big stick.
Di Moxham Well what happened next?? You must have got to the right station somehow......So glad to hear you've met up with your friends xxxDi
joyce westrip All looking forward to see how you survived the train experience - I can assure you you will come back a person with a much different outlook on life - India does that to one. You will veer from Frustration to Fascination
Noor Glad you are safe - and glad you are a brunette again - you would have been even more glaringly obvious as a blonde! Look forward to hearing about the houseboat.
