So after waking up with a stinking cold and sore throat, it was time to head off down the west coast to the land of sand flies & mosquito!!! And omg it is. The drive to Punakaiki was approx 4 hours but the scenery along the way was out of this world. I've never seen anything like it. I would talk to my self in amazement and stop off at a few viewing points to take pictures.
Punakaiki or pancake rocks as it's known is a small place where the rock formation is literally like pancakes . Amazing how over the years its formed but is spectacular to see. I also went to an exhibition or shop of manukka honey.
It was then a 20 minute drive down to Hokitika which is the home of the green stone and beautiful sunsets. The little town is very quaint and lovely shops and of course I had to purchase a new necklace!!! The beach is full of driftwood which you can find sculptures all in different shapes, sizes & designs. I took a drive out to Hokitika gorge which was beautiful except there I was in flip flops, shorts and a tee-shirt while everyone else was in long sleeved tops, trousers and boots.... The bites on my legs and arms now tell me why!!!! The Sand flies!!! I am covered in bites. I managed to get back in time though to see the beautiful sunset and take some fantastic pictures.. It was then off to the bar for a few G&T's.....
