What an amazing day. We left Christchurch at 7.30 this morning and drove along a beautiful coastline for about 3 hours until we arrived at Kaikoura (we passed some penguins, they were dead cute!). Our driver took us to a cool spot where you could see gorgeous views right around the peninsula!
We checked in at our hostel, its called Topspot, its really nice but not many showers, that should be fun first thing in the morning when a coach load of people are trying to get up and out for the same time!
We had a short walk through a nice little town to the Whale watching place, we watched a short video and then went on a bus to the marina. On the boat there was a cool GPS system showing where the baot was, the depth, speed etc. The reason why Kairoura has such good sea life is because it has an underwater canyon not far from the shore. So the water is 5m deep for about 10 minutes and then all of a sudden there was a shelf and it dropped deep enough to fit 4 empire state buildings on top of eachother. We where on the boat for about 20 minutes when we spotted our first whale, Little Nick. It was so cool! I have taken a couple of videos, the pictures dont really do the experience justice. He was really close for about 10 minutes and then he showed us his tail. The crew said that this usuaally indicates a deep dive for food, but a few minutes later he was back blowing water out of his blow hole again! We watched this whale for about 20 minutes and then went and found another, it was spectacular!
So we stay in our hostel tonight and then early the tomorrow morning its back on the bus for another couple of hours drive to a place called Nelson. We have chosen to stay here 2 nights because its meant to be a cool place with loadsa to do, it a national park so nice walks and stuff.
Il let you know how tomorrow goes! So far im well happy with our choice to travel with the Kiwi Experience bus! Love ya! xx
