Claire's Travels
Hi Everyone!
Thought I would write a quick email while the heavens have opened up big time over here! Well today we went on a trip around the island. as always in these situations we pulled the short straw on the people joining us on the trip. Firstly there was a lady (didnt quite catch her name) who from the start would leave us alone - constantly asking questions egarding where we were staying, what was it like, was the night life good etc etc. Ok to be fair that doesnt sound too bad but you have to understand that while we were having this delightful conversation she was having a full blown arguement with the two guys in front of her. Bascially she had asked if their names had a meaning (they were from Israel and the names were slightly unusual) They turned around and said that the werent Indians, so no their names didnt have meanings, just like the english etc. Well she was having none of this, she started to tell them what Timmy, Brian and Paul meant and that most names had a meaning as we originate from the Vikings, Celts etc. The guys then explained that actually their names meant tree and something else I cant remember. She then lost it and asked them why they had been so defensive when in fact they knew this answer...anyway this all happened within the first 15mins of us being in the minibus...good times.
As the trip continued the lady became slightly more bearable (she made a few witty comments) but oh my god, one of the guys just got worse and worse. We had to listen to a whole story about the price of pineapples in Israel apparently they cost about 500 baht..shocking!!) Then as part of our trip we were visiting monkeys at work. Well he refused to get out of the bus, stating that it was cruel and he didnt want to be a part of...once he realised that everyone else was going he joined in. The monkeys are actually trained to collect the coconuts from the trees and are treated really well. We all got to hold the monkey (or in fact have it sit on us) but funnily enough he refused.
The fun continued when we were getting back in the bus and he turned around to one of our tour guides who smokes and told them that smoking was really bad and that he shouldnt do it. The guide just turned around in a very light manner and said that plenty of people do it. The guy then said 'yes but you might be the unlucky one'. Cheery.
His general polite manner continued on with him accusing the guide of lying regarding a mummified monk and questioning the route we decided to take to the waterful. I really dont know how his friend could stand to be around him!
Anyway, we actually ended up switching groups (damn shame) because they were on teh early trip and we were on the afternoon one. The trip itself was really good. Like I said, we visited monkeys being trained and a mummified monk (for some unknown reason he hasnt decomposed even though he is not wrapped in anything) we also visited a waterfall, but we spent most of our time watching the elephants being washed and fed..oh and a few crazy monkies chasing each other) We then moved onto 2 temples, one of which was the Big Buddha. I'll put the photos up once I find a computer that will except the camera. All in all a really nice day out...especially when we changed minibuses!
The weather..apart from the current downpour, has been really good. It was extremely hot today. I think tomorrow will be a beach day. Its a hard life. We will be here for the next few days, then onto Ko Pha Ghan for a few days, moving onto Bangkok and making our way over to Cambodia. Finally back to Bangkok but we might try and sqeeze in a few days in Chang Mai. Only 3 weeks to go until we are back in the wonderful world of Blightly!
Cant wait to see you all! x x x
