Claire's Travels
Hello again
We had a really great day today! Firstly we started the day with scrambled eggs and bacon...wasnt quite the same as home cooked but it was still tasty.
We then headed to the ice mummy museum (I'm afraid I cant remember the actual name of the place). This place was fasinating! In 1995 an american explorer discovered a mummy of a 12 year old girl buried under a glacier in Peru. Due to the ice she has been completely preserved - she still has muscles and her clothing is intact. She was an offering to the Inca Gods back in the 14th Century. It was amazing to see what the explorer had found - clothes, shoes, pottery and most importantly 14 mummies!
The guide showing us around the museum was really good and we had been told at the entrance that our entrance fee didnt include anything for the guide so we could tip her if we wanted to. Well it wasnt so much an option...as we were leaving we thanked her and started to walk towards the reception to get our purses (we werent allowed to take anything in with us) and she turned around and asked where her tip was! Literally demanded the money! I dont know about anyone else but I wouldnt really classify that as a tip. Anyway, it was excellent and well worth visiting!
We then headed to the Santa Catalina Covent, which takes up a whole block in the centre of town. This covent was only opened to the public in the 1970s. 30 nuns still leave there but we didnt see any when we were walking around.
Well I have never seen such a big convent (to be fair I havent been in a huge number to judge but this has 6 streets within it, so I thinks it classifies as a biggy!) We were told to stick to the left to insure that we saw everything. There were so many rooms - most of which seemed to be bedrooms. We were a little disappointed to discover that the current nuns live in nice flats above the old convent. Once again another worth while place to visit in Arequipa.
We are having to head back to our favourite place tomorrow...puno (hoorah!) because we want to head to the salt lakes in Bolivia and unfortunately we have to go through there. Slightly bad planning on our behalf! Oh well, you live and learn!
chao for now!
