Claire's Travels
Hi everyone!
Ok firstly ignore the picture that accompanies this entry - they didnt have any images of Bolivia and I havent uploaded my pictures yet (I will do that soon)
Ok so we crossed the border into Bolivia yesterday - we were told that we had to get off the bus and get our passports stamped quickly as the bus would leave in 20 mins whether we were on it or not. This was all because of the national election. I'm not quite sure what difference that makes when getting your passport stamped but unfortunately my spanish doesnt quite stretch to political debates.
Once over the other side we stopped in a town called Copacabana - obviously originality was lacking when they were trying to name places in South America. Anyway, it is a really nice little place - definately the nicer side of Lake Titicaca. We had lunch there and mooched around the stalls. I bought giant popcorn!
We then got back on the bus to La Paz. The views as we made our way long the coast was amazing! I got quite a few pictures of lake titicaca, so I hope they do it justice.
Half way there, we had to get off the bus and get on a little boat that took us across the lake to the other side. We left all our bags on the bus and at one stage thought we were going to watch them disappear as the bus sank - it had just been driven onto what can only be described as a rather large plank of wood. This was apparently going to make it to the other side of the lake without falling off the side. You'll all be delighted..as we were...to know that the bus and our belongings safely made it across.
We were on our way again to La Paz. At one point we literally drove around a corner and La Paz appeared. Now I knew it was going to be quite big as its the capital but it just seems to stretch for hundreds of miles. It lies in a valley and the houses just spill up the mountain side.
Our bus randomly dumped us at the side of a street, which was nice. Luckily we had written down a few hotel options so we headed to one called Senorial. It was basic but adequate. That night we headed out for dinner and they were playing Live 8 on the tv. It was really nice to be able to sing along to the music - really niss having a radio!
Today we just mooched around the city. We had heard about a witches market so we headed there. It was a little disappointing as we thought it would be really huge but it was just a few stalls (actually we arent 100% sure that this was the market but we think it was!). They were selling the normal jumpers, hats, beads oh and a new addition were the lama foetuses...which were horrible! I'm not sure exactly who would buy these but obviously people do!
We also sorted out our trip to the salt lakes at Uyuni. We leave tonight and get there tomorrow morning. The trip last 3 days and we get to visit lagoons and volcanoes etc so should be wicked! On that note I actually have to go and get the bus so I will be in touch after the trip!
Until then, toodles! x x
